Brussels, 01/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 31 May, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organisation (WHO), stated that the electromagnetic field in category 2B, potentially contains carcinogenic elements. This decision now puts mobile phone waves in the same category as glass wool and petrol fumes. Michèle Rivasi (Greens/EFA, France) said that this “was better late than never”. She also underlined that this recognition must be immediately followed up by clear and explicit measures by the public authorities, particularly with regard to children and teenagers, some of the main consumers of long date. The MEP asked: “Similarly to cigarettes, when will there be a warning that significant mobile phone use can be damaging to health?” (I.L./transl.fl)
