Brussels, 17/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - At its plenary session in Strasbourg last week, the European Parliament (EP) adopted the resolution by Marietje Schaake (ALDE, Netherlands) on cultural diplomacy. MEPs argued that a “Cultural Diplomacy” Directorate General should be put in place in the European External Action Service in order to promote European culture in non-EU countries. They called, too, for cultural visas of artists and those working in the culture sector. Another resolution, from Marie-Thérèse Sanchez-Schmid (EPP, France), calls for support for creators of culture to be increased and for the digital single market to be completed, while, at the same time, protecting copyright. Thirdly, in a resolution adopted by show of hands, MEPs call on the European Commission to give exceptional consideration to the probable candidacy of Sarajevo for the title of European Capital of Culture 2014.
