Brussels, 16/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has called for the United Nations Security Council to be reformed, with regional representation where Europe has “a single seat”. “We believe that dialogue and negotiation can pave the way for reform of the UN Security Council to which the majority of its members can sign up”, Frattini is quoted by AFP as saying at a meeting to discuss this issue in Rome on Monday 16 May. Frattini stressed the regional approach, underlining that “integrated regional institutions are playing an increasingly important role” on the world scene: the EU, he said, is a good example of this. Italy is against increasing the size of the Security Council to include new permanent members and is calling for seats to be allocated to regional organisations, he said. He also argued for improved working methods, such as, for example, greater coordination between the Security Council and the countries which contribute most to UN peace-keeping forces.
