Trade talks shelved

Brussels 16/05/2011 (Agence EUROPE) - On Monday 16 May, European Commissioner for Enlargement and the European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle began a two-day visit to Algeria and will meet Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci, and other members of the government (trade, economy and finance, water resources) to take stock of the state of play with bilateral cooperation. Algeria has on several occasions expressed its desire to re-examine the association agreement. The local media stressed the country's ambition to postpone the implementation of the timetable for customs dismantlement provided for under the agreement, due to an “imbalance in trade, not including hydrocarbons, in favour of the European party”.
