13/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - EP condemns harassment and intimidation against journalists and civil society activists. In a resolution adopted on Thursday 12 May, the European Parliament deplores the Azerbaijani practice of intimidating, finalising, continuing and condemning independent journalists and political activists by accusing them of various offences. The authorities in Azerbaijan are urged to release all opposition members, young activists and bloggers held in detention further to the peaceful demonstrations of 11 March 2011 and 2 and 17 April 2011, to release Jabbar Savalan and Bakhtiyar Hajiev (who used Facebook to call for anti-government protests), and to cancel the charges held against them. The EP expresses concern about the worsening of the human rights situation in the country. (L.C./transl.jl)
