Van Rompuy calls for human rights and Tibet to be raised

Brussels, 13/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Herman Van Rompuy will be in China next week (15-18 May). While there, the president of the European Council will meet, inter alia, President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao (17 May), as well as Vice-President Xi Jinping (18 may) in Beijing. EU-China strategic relations, preparations for the next bilateral summit, as well as international policy issues will be on the agenda of their talks. A representative for the Dalaï Lama in Europe, Kelsang Gyaltsen, called on Van Rompuy to also raise human rights issues in China and to express the concern of Europeans about repression in Tibet. The president of the European Council is expected to “make public the EU's disappointment and criticise the despicable situation in Tibet”, Gyaltsen told EUobserver. Not raising the Tibetan question would “send a very bad signal to hardliners in China that they can continue to abuse the rights of Tibetan people with impunity from the international community”, he said.
