THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/weu

02/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Taking stock of the foreign, security and defence policy of the EU on the agenda of final session of Assembly of WEU. The European Security and Defence Assembly/Assembly of the Western European Union (ESDA/WEU) will hold its 60th and final plenary session in Paris on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 May. On Tuesday, a debate on events in the Mediterranean and their impact on European security will also be held. During the session, which will be attended by Pierre Vimont, the executive secretary general of the European External Action Service (EEAS), amongst others, the national members of the ESDA will discuss the latest developments in common security and defence policy (CSDP). Another major issue will be European defence capabilities, with a report from Portugal's José Mendes Bota, taking stock of the work of the technical and aerospace committee of the Assembly over the 45 years of its existence. For the first time, the ESDA will also award the European “Citizenship, Security and Defence” prize, to recognise extraordinary actions in favour of the development of European citizenship and European security and defence awareness.
