Proposals for new EU-Cape Verde tuna agreement

Brussels, 02/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Proposals on a new fisheries partnership agreement between the European Community and the Republic of Cape Verde were submitted to the Council and European Parliament on 27 April. A new protocol was initialled on 22 December 2010, covering a three-year period from 1 September 2011, as the current protocol will expire on 31 August 2011 (see EUROPE 10288).

In terms of fishing opportunities, 28 tuna seiners, 35 surface longliners and 11 pole-and-line vessels will be authorised to fish under the new protocol. The breakdown is as follows: - tuna seiners: Spain 16 vessels, France 12 vessels; - surface longliners: Spain 26 vessels, Portugal 9 vessels; - pole-and-line vessels: Spain 7 vessels, France 4 vessels.

EU financial compensation amounts to €1,305,000 over the three years (€435,000 per year, compared with €385,000 at present): - €325,000 per year in compensation for granting EU vessels an annual reference tonnage of 5,000 tonnes of tuna for 74 vessels; - €110,000 per year to support the development of the sectoral fisheries policy of the Republic of Cape Verde.
