Strasbourg, 08/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - From 11 to 15 April, Brussels and several other European towns will be hosting the 5th edition of the European Sustainable Energy Week on the theme of “smart energy for a sustainable future”. The event will be opened on Tuesday 12 April by Günther Oettinger, Energy Commissioner, who will deliver a speech on the EU's future energy policy and especially on energy efficiency. Addressing the press, Oettinger will then present the broad lines of a communication on smart grids. During the evening of 12 April, the names of the six award winners of the Sustainable Energy Week will be published. On 13 April, Oettinger will open a competition of refrigerators bearing the European energy label, demonstrating gains in energy efficiency. Over 30,000 people will take part in the 600 events throughout Europe. This year, focus will be on matters relating to energy efficiency of buildings, products and electrical household appliances, to renewable energy solutions (biomass, solar and wind power), to low carbon technology, and to sustainable urban transport. The Sustainable Energy Week is organised by the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (EACI) on behalf of the Commission's DG Energy. (E.H./transl.jl)
