EU Ambassador to China Markus Ederer expressed his concern, on Tuesday 5 April, at the fate of the artist, Ai Weiwei, one of the most well-known critics of the Chinese government, who disappeared last weekend as he sought to board a plane for Hong Kong. “We call on the Chinese authorities to refrain from using arbitrary detention under any circumstances”, he states in a press release. In December, Ai Weiwei had already been prevented from going to Oslo to attend the symbolic ceremony for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the imprisoned Chinese dissident, Liu Xiaobo.
