Ashton urges President Sahel to put a stop to violence

Brussels, 05/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The violent and bloody repression of anti-government protestors in Yemen causes concern for the EU. “I am gravely concerned” at recent action by law enforcement officers against protestors in several large countries in Yemen on 3 and 4 April and which has “caused many deaths and injuries”, Catherine Ashton deplores in a press release on 5 April. “Contrary to earlier commitments, freedom of expression and security of peaceful demonstrators is not being guaranteed”, the high representative for foreign affairs criticises. Ashton telephoned President Saleh last week calling on him to put an “immediate” stop to the violence. “The government and the security forces must respect and protect all human rights and fundamental freedoms. This must be done without delay”, Ashton stresses, saying the EU wants an “orderly political transition” to democracy and economic reform. (H.B./transl.jl)
