Brussels, 31/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Peace Implementation Council (PIC), at which 55 countries and organisations, including the EU, are represented to oversee implementation of the Dayton peace agreement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, has expressed its deep concern at the political impasse in the country which still does not have a new central government, six months after elections. “More than 15 years after the signature of the Dayton Agreement, the PIC is deeply concerned at continuing problems in fulfilling its terms and in embedding the rule of law in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the time for political leaders to demonstrate strong qualities of realism, constructive compromise and political will”, states a press release published by the PIC steering board, which met in Sarajevo on 29-30 March at the level of the political directors. The PEC calls on political leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina to “engage in a spirit of compromise” to urgently agree on the formation of a broad-based government at the state level. Such a government would, the PIC says, permit progress in many issues, “including addressing the outstanding urgent reforms necessary for European and Euro-Atlantic integration”. General elections were held in Bosnia on 3 October. Six months later, political parties have still not managed to form a central government responsible for setting in place the reforms required by the EU for taking the country forward along the road towards European integration.
