Brussels, 17/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland) will be in Egypt and Tunisia from Thursday 17 to Monday 21 March. The aim of the visit is to listen to the Egyptian and Tunisian transition authorities, give consideration to what they expect (including the willingness of the Egyptian authorities to accept European assistance in organising elections) and to present a package of concrete measures which the EU is ready to implement, if asked by the two states, and to ensure the long-term development of the region. Major issues will be the assistance the EU might be able to give the Egyptians in preparing elections (unlike Tunisia, Egypt has not yet said if it would accept European help) and implementing projects developed through the Union for the Mediterranean and multilateral partnerships (assistance for small and medium-sized enterprises, relaunch of energy projects). The EP president will also seek to have inter-parliamentary cooperation with these two states resumed as quickly as possible. In Tunisia, Buzek will hold talks with interim Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebi and Yadh Ben Achour who is in charge of implementing the objectives of the revolution. In Cairo, Buzek will meet the leader of the Coptic church, Pope Shenouda, youth and civil society representatives, Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa and military authorities.
