17/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - EP president reiterates need for urgent action in Libya. The introduction of a no-fly zone over Libya would be a solution that would help the Libyan citizens, the president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland) told a small group of Polish journalists on Thursday 17 March. However, this military operation can only be implemented with the participation of the Arab League and African Union states. Setting up the zone without the participation of local pilots or air forces from Libya's neighbouring countries is totally inadvisable, Buzek said. He also underlined the urgent nature of such action, saying things must be speeded up as “we are perhaps just a few days away from an event that would be a very sad solution to the Libyan revolution, namely a victory by Colonel Gaddafi”. Strengthening of the embargo and sanctions, which should also be imposed on oil, as well as an effective freeze on the assets of those responsible for repression and the re-use of these funds in favour of humanitarian aid, would be other measures that the international community should adopt to support the change of regime in Libya, the EP president said.
