Brussels, 14/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 14 March, the European Commission called on Austria, Estonia, Germany and the United Kingdom to notify the measures taken to transpose the rules on common security indicators for railways into their national legislations. According to the Commission, these four member states are the only ones not to have notified the national legislation implementing the directive on common security indicators (CSI) and the common methods of calculating the cost of accidents (directive 2009/149/EC). This directive, which dates from November 2009, requires the member states to collect the CSI, which, in turn, make it possible to assess safety performances in the railway sector. Thanks to the standardisation of the calculation methods, it is possible to assess the cost of rail accidents and the level of safety of the railways in the member states. The Commission put its request in the form of a reasoned opinion, in line with the infringement procedures of the EU. If the authorities in these countries do not inform it within two months of the measures taken to come into line with the directive, the Commission may bring the matter before the European Court of Justice.
