Brussels, 14/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), whose role is due to be extended to include the Mediterranean region, according to the recent communication from Catherine Ashton to the Council, welcomes the conclusion of the European Council which met in Brussels on Friday of last week, 11 March, EBRD President Thomas Mirow says.
In his statement, Mirow says that the EBRD is “currently assessing a request from Egypt to become a recipient country for investment from the Bank” and that the EBRD, “subject to the approval of its shareholders, stands ready to provide its experience in supporting the process of economic transition as part of a coordinated international response to events in the region”. Some €1 billion could be provided over a relatively short period, he said.
At the end of February, he announced the creation, before the start of next year, of a €1 billion special fund for Morocco and Egypt, two of the EBRD shareholder countries. (F.B./transl.rt)
