EU must “review its policies”, says EMHRN

Brussels, 10/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Executive Committee of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), meeting in Geneva on 4-6 March, at the 16th Session of the Human Rights Council pressed the international community to provide the political and financial support needed to ensure that the transitions under way in Tunisia and Egypt lead to the establishment of democracy and full respect for human rights. It recommended that an independent mechanism to monitor the electoral process be set up. The EMHRN called for independent investigations into the murders of peaceful demonstrators in Egypt and Tunisia and, indeed, in Algeria, and for those responsible to be brought to justice. The Network strongly condemns the massacres being carried out in Libya and backs moves for referral to the International Criminal Court.

It called on the international community to closely monitor the situation in the other countries of the region in order to encourage the emergence of a transition process which has every chance of success. To this end, the EU should review its Mediterranean policies, renegotiate existing programmes and action plans in the light of the new circumstances, and avoid any action that might legitimise the remaining authoritarian regimes in the region.
