Brussels, 16/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EuroMed human rights group REMDH was in Cairo from 9-12 February and hailed the extraordinary courage and determination of the Egyptian people, men and women alike, in achieving freedom. REMDH is an umbrella group of human rights act visits from across the EuroMed region. It calls on the supreme council of the armed forces in Egypt to keep its promise to respect the desires of the Egyptian people and launch a transparent process leading to constitutional reform and the holding of transparent and fair presidential and parliamentary elections, ensuring that women are fully involved in the process. REMDH calls for an immediate end to the 30-year state of emergency and the release of everyone arrested for peaceful actions since 25 January 2011.
REMDH says that huge challenges need to be overcome to launch and implement the reforms aspired to by the Egyptian people and it calls on the international community to provide unreserved aid to Egypt in the transition to democracy and to continue to support movements for freedom, justice and democracy in other countries of North Africa and the Middle East which desire to follow the same path as Tunisia and Egypt.
