Stronger public/private partnerships in field of security

Brussels, 10/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 9 February, Commissioner for Home Affairs Cécilia Malmström and Secretary of State to the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior László Felkai called for greater cooperation between the public and private sectors in the implementation and success of the European Internal Security Strategy (which was presented by the Commission on 21 November 2010). Malmström and Felkai were attending an initial high-level meeting on the subject, organised by the European Organisation for Security (EOS). During this meeting, the participants discussed ways of building “a more coherent approach to achieving the objectives laid down by the European strategy”, a press release states. Malmström argued that “to truly make a difference, it is crucial that everyone does their part. Not only the EU's institutions and the member states, but also civil society, local authorities and the private sector”. The EOS calls on the Commission and European decision-makers also to discuss the funds to be allocated to internal security, as part of the debates on the forthcoming multi-annual financial framework, and highlighted four areas for action: the management and supervision of the borders, cyber-security and cyber-crime, protecting the transport infrastructure and managing crises and natural disasters. The Hungarian Presidency pointed out that there are “expectations which have not been met” within the EU over security matters, referring to the example of the delayed modernisation of the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the SIS II system, which the Presidency hopes will be operational from 2013.
