Brussels, 28/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 31 January, the European Commission will present a raft of initiatives aiming to reduce the number of young people in Europe leaving school or training programmes with low levels of qualifications. The communication to be presented by the Commission will provide a brief outline of the main causes of young people dropping out of school and its risks for economic development and the future of civil society. It describes the impact of dropping out of school on individuals, society and the economy, and provides an overview of existing measures at Community level and those to be adopted to tackle the problem. The Commission will also propose a recommendation, which will define the basic guidelines for consistent, complete policies, based on evidence to prevent early dropping out of school. These measures are part of the EUROPE 2020 strategy and the guideline initiatives, “Youth in Action” and the “Agenda for New Skills and Employment”. (I.L./transl.fl)
