Initiative for resource efficiency welcomed by FoEE

Brussels, 27/01/2011 (Agence Europe) -The Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) has welcomed the flagship resource efficiency initiative launched by the Commission on Wednesday, 26 January (EUROPE10302). It recognises the scale of the challenge over Europe's non-sustainable use of global natural resources. The NGO would now like the EU to draft and implement policies with objectives and four indicators: “land footprint”, “water footprint”, “carbon footprint” and the overall use of resources. Michal Warhust, an expert in resources and consumption affairs at FoEE stated, “Europe is using far more than its fair share of the world's resources, with devastating impacts on ecosystems and communities. We welcome this realisation by the European Commission of the need for Europe to reduce its use of natural resources but it must now move rapidly to create solid policies to reduce our resource use, backed by an effective system for measuring and setting targets for our use of land, water, materials and carbon emissions, wherever they are in the world”, said Michael Warhurst, resources and consumption campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe.
