04/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - That Hungary has just taken on the rotating presidency of the EU Council of Ministers will in no way prevent the Commission from opening infringement proceedings against it over the controversial law on the media, should this law prove not to be compatible with the 2007 directive on audiovisual services (see EUROPE 10285), the Commission spokesman said on Tuesday 4 January. “Let there be no doubt that, if there is indeed an infringement of Community law, the Commission will act,” he told press. He added that he had heard it suggested that the fact that Hungary had now assumed the presidency of the EU Council would be a factor that might prevent the Commission from taking action, yet that there had been several examples in the past which demonstrate that the timetable for infringement proceedings was not synchronised with Council presidencies. The Commission has not yet received formal notification of the text, but, as soon as it does, legal investigation of the Hungarian law will begin. (H.B./transl.rt)
