Brussels, 20/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - In the latest edition of its newsletter, EMWIS, the Euro-Mediterranean Information System on the know-how in the Water Sector, gives a summary of a report which says that “without fundamental changes in (water management) policies and practices, the situation will worsen, bringing serious social, political and environmental consequences”. The report, “Water: Sustainable management of a Rare Resource” says that “two thirds of water supply sources in the Arab world come from outside the region and are already at their limits. By 2015, the only countries of the region which will not be facing water shortages will be Iraq and Sudan”. The report was presented at the third annual Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) in Beirut on 4-5 November. The Forum was devoted to discussion of the sustainable management of water resources in the Arab world. (F.B./transl.rt)
