Brussels, 20/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - On 14 December, six foreign ministers of former Communist EU countries, wrote to Viviane Reding, European Justice Commissioner, to call for legislation to be adopted condemning the denial or trivialisation of crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. The ministers of Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Romania write: “The principle of justice should assure just treatment of victims of every totalitarian regime, as well as a proper prevention of all international crimes”. They add that “alongside the prosecution and punishment of criminals, the denial of every international crime should be treated according to the same standards to prevent favourable conditions for the rehabilitation and rebirth of totalitarian ideologies”. The European Commission is expected to adopt a report on this subject by the end of the year, even if support from the European executive to the request made by the six ministers seems premature at this stage.
