Turkish-Cypriot problem hampers EU-NATO relations

Brussels, 09/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - “The basic problem” is “the division of Cyprus and the dispute connected to that”, said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen speaking to the press after his informal EU defence ministers' meeting on Thursday 9 December. In this context and in order to make progress in relations between the EU and NATO, “we need some concrete steps”, he said in response to a question raised by AFP. Addressing EU defence ministers, Rasmussen reiterated his proposals which, on one hand, “is a message to the EU to conclude an arrangement between Turkey and the EDA in that context also, a security agreement between Turkey and the EU and, on the other hand, clear emphasis of the fact that cooperation between NATO and the EU must take place between all member states”. “This is a balanced approach”, he said, reiterating that “the HR and I will move forward on that basis”.
