First “Women Inspiring Europe” calendar published

Brussels, 08/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - What do an Italian philosopher, a German lawyer of Turkish descent, a top Swedish manager, a Finnish farmer, a UK civil servant and a Maltese muscular dystrophy sufferer all have in common? They are among the 12 winners of the 2010 “Women Inspiring Europe” competition and we can see their faces on the 2011 calendar. The idea for the calendar, the first of its kind devoted to this issue, came from the Vilnius-based European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE).

The women come from 11 different EU countries and, among them, there is a former prime minister and a triathlon champion. Despite the varied origins, the differences in the ages and backgrounds of the women, the calendar has a recurrent theme - women's efforts to break through the invisible “walls” that many still face in Europe today. Profiles of the women, all with facts and figures, are carried on the page on which their photo appears. For further information, go to: http://www.eige.europa.eu (G.B./transl.rt)
