Brussels, 08/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - In the evening of Monday 6 December 2010, the chair of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, described as “irresponsible” Eric Cantona's call for Europeans to close their bank account to punish the banks. EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn echoed Juncker, saying that he (Rehn) is a fan of Manchester United but thinks that Cantona is better at football than economics. Juncker said that people like Cantona should not mislead ordinary people who do not have as much money put aside as Eric Cantona. Cantona's idea is starting to be emulated but it is far from clear how successful it will be. The idea has been given a partial thumbs-up by Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti, who said that Cantona had the right idea in many ways but it did not apply to Italy. Several hundreds of thousands of people have pledged online to withdraw their cash from the banks and MEP Pascal Canfin has started dribbling the ball, considering calling for Europeans to change banks, shifting their accounts to banks that are more responsible and do not speculate so much.
