Call for anti-racism directive to be transposed

Brussels, 29/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - With 28 November the deadline for the transposition of the framework-decision of the EU on the fight against racism and xenophobia, the European Network against Racism (ENAR) calls upon all member states of the EU to transpose the standards laid down in this legislation, which was adopted in November 2008, as a matter of urgency. “The rising tendency of racism, xenophobia and far-right extremism across Europe is a reminder of the urgent need to implement this decision, said Mohammed Aziz, president of ENAR. “Not implementing this key decision, in spite of its weaknesses, has the potential to foster a growing sense of impunity for racist hate in Europe”, he added. So far, several member states have not yet transposed this decision into their national law, including Ireland; Estonia, Denmark, Italy and Cyprus. (B.C./transl.fl)
