Brussels, 10/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - European integration is threatened by eurosceptic forces present in all EU member states, forces which lie to citizens by making them believe that nation states can survive on their own in this globalised world, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said in his speech on Europe delivered in Berlin on 9 November (anniversary of the fall of the Wall). “We have together to fight the danger of a new euroscepticism. This is no longer the monopoly of a few countries. In every member state, there are people who believe their country can survive alone in a globalised world. It is more than an illusion - it is a lie!” Van Rompuy said in the German capital. The “biggest enemy of Europe today is fear”, the president of the European Council continued. “Fear leads to egoism, egoism leads to nationalism, and nationalism leads to war”, he went on, also quoting the former French president, François Mitterrand, who said: “Nationalism is war”. The fear of enemies lurking within our very borders is widely felt. It is “a feeling all over Europe, not of a majority, but everywhere present”, Van Rompuy said. (H.B./transl.jl)
