EU must play more robust role in Transnistria

Brussels, 21/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The EU should play a “more robust role” in resolving the problem of Transnistria, the European Parliament states in a resolution on Moldova adopted on 21 October in Strasbourg. In particular, “the prolongation of this issue should not hamper Moldova's EU integration”, MEPs say. They welcome the progress already made by the country in economic reform but trust that the early legislative elections on 28 November will help to consolidate the democratic institutions and respect of rule of law and human rights. The EP also encourages the Commission to present a roadmap as soon as possible for visa liberalisation. MEPs welcome the Commission's “very good results” so far from Moldovan authorities in talks on an association agreement. Talks were initiated in January. (H.B./transl.jl)
