European air police network set up

Brussels, 21/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 20 October, the Belgian federal police launched the European airborne police and border security services network “Airpol” project. This initiative forms part of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers and is expected to receive Council approval very shortly. The aim of the network is to increase the general security of EU airports and civil aviation by means of closer and more structured cooperation among member states, says a Belgian federal police press release. The airborne police and border control services in Europe have so far never had such a network. There are already European police service networks for roads - Tispol - railways - Railpol - and inspection of inland waterways - Aquapol - hence the creation of Airpol, the Belgian federal police say. Airpol will concentrate on three areas of activity: policing airports, aviation security and security of air borders, working closely with the European Frontex agency. The ultimate aim of Airpol is to create a permanent, multidisciplinary body made up of police, law enforcement and border control services, operating in European airports. (B.C./transl.rt)
