Debate on European collective redress system

Brussels, 11/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - What are the next steps in developing a European approach to collective redress system, which is included in the Commission's work programme for 2010? Commission Vice-President and Justice and Fundamental Rights Commissioner Viviane Reding, her colleague at Competition Joaquín Almunia and Consumer Policy Commissioner John Dalli will jointly present their view of things to the College of Commissioners on Tuesday 12 October. They will call for a coherent framework and common principles which will have to respect any collective redress, no matter the sector of activity. They will suggest that the need to ensure swift compensation for injured parties, the possibility of using methods of collective consensual resolution of their complaints, and the effectiveness of European civil and procedural law for collective actions and judgments all feature among the common principles. The three commissioners will also announce the launch of a public consultation exercise which will seek to identify on the basic common principles and on the forms of collective redress that could fit into EU law and into the legal systems of the 27 member states.
