EU helps set up Palestinian police force to look after tourists

Brussels, 06/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - Experts from the EU police mission in the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS) held their first working meeting on Wednesday 6 October 2010 with their counterparts from the Palestinian police force with a view to setting up a police unit responsible for tourism issues in Palestine. The first recommendations describe the resources and capabilities of the new arm of the Palestinian police force and are expected to be submitted by the working group shortly for approval by the Palestinian police Research, Planning and Development Agency (RPDA). Once set up, the tourism police will work with the Palestinian Authority's tourism authority and will be responsible for ensuring the safety of travellers to Palestine, organising patrols of tourist sites and providing aid and protection to visitors. It will also be responsible for dealing with crimes against tourists, investigating such crimes and also damage to national heritage. (A.By. trans fl)
