EU says threat of terror attacks in Europe is real

Brussels, 06/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The terror threat in Europe certainly exists, explained EU anti-terror coordinator Gilles de Kerchove on Wednesday 6 October. He said in a statement broadcast on Europe by Satellite (EbS) that there was a real threat and he thought the public authorities would not terrorise the population without good reason. De Kerchove said the threat was part of a general threat that had not diminished recently. Washington, London, Paris, Tokyo and Stockholm have issued warnings of terror threats in Europe and de Kerchove said he knew that Al Qaida was still planning to carry out big terror attacks, particularly because pressure is mounting on the core of Al Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan from attacks from drones and special US operations. On Thursday 7 October in Luxembourg EU interior ministers will discuss with Jane Holl Lute, a deputy to US homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano, the threat of terrorist attacks in Europe (see EUROPE 10229).
