27/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - The French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, has written to the EU high representative for foreign affairs, Catherine Ashton, requesting that she undertakes a joint approach on behalf of the EU27 to Tehran (Iran) to save the life of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, sentenced to death by stoning. Kouchner suggests that Iran should be threatened with sanctions if it continues to violate human rights. Kouchner explains in the letter that he wants the European Council to start working on this issue again and to take new measures against the people organising repression in Iran. He suggests that EU foreign ministers should discuss the issue at their Gymnich-type meeting in Brussels on 10 and 11 September 2010. (H.B./transl.fl)
