27/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - Struggling to collect enough tax income, the Greek government announced plans on Thursday 26 August to regulate the betting and gambling industry. It says there are two aims - to comply with a European Court of Justice ruling (Case C-65/05) that the Greek ban on slot machines is illegal; and to regulate the under-the-counter gambling industry, estimated to be worth around €4 billion a year in Greece. Earlier this month, the European Court of Justice fined Greece €31,536 a day and a one-off fine of €3 million for failing to comply with a Court of Justice ruling on slot machines (Case C-109/08).
