Madrid and Riga both to receive former Guantanamo detainees

Brussels, 23/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - Spain and Latvia are each to receive a former prisoner from the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, the Pentagon announced on Thursday 22 July. Spain has received a third former prisoner from Guantanamo, an Afghan national, having received a Palestinian in February and a Yemeni in May. The Latvian government agreed to receive a former prisoner onto its territory in early February. The American authorities have not announced the names of the freed men. Washington thanked the two countries for their “willingness to support US efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility”. There are now 176 prisoners remaining at Guantanamo. Europe has so far received around twenty former prisoners. (B.C./transl.fl)
