Brussels, 16/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - Taking part at a press conference on 8 July held by the NGO, Greenpeace, European Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said he was in favour of a Community price system (feed-in tariffs) guaranteed by the public authorities to support the development of renewable energies. “We need a German law on renewable energies at European level”, he said, referring to the German legislation which provides for support tariffs for renewable energy producers. The same day, Greenpeace presented a study demonstrating that 97% of EU electricity and 92% of its total energy could come from renewable sources, thus bringing a reduction of 95% in greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. Renewable energies accounted for 10.3% of EU27 energy consumption in 2008, according to data published on 13 July by Eurostat (EUROPE 10181). (E.H./transl.jl)
