Brussels, 09/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - In Brussels on Wednesday 9 June, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) re-elected Mercedes Bresso (PES, Italy) by acclamation as its president. Bresso was re-elected to this post by general consent. Her term of office was cut short, however, following elections in Italy when the Socialists were voted out of office (see EUROPE 10075 and 10117). Last week, the Council, on a proposal from the president of the Italian Republic, re-appointed Bresso as a member of the CoR, as a Piedmontese regional councillor. The PES Group then put Bresso's name forward for the presidency of the Committee. In these exceptional circumstances, the acting chairwoman proposed that Bresso be elected by a truncated procedure, that is, by acclamation and without any need for a further vote. (G.B./transl.rt)
