Loan for improving Madrid's water supply

Brussels, 08/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 7 June, the European Investment Bank granted a €100 million loan to the Canal de Isabel II (CYII) company, which is responsible for water distribution in the autonomous community of Madrid, in order to allow it to finance investment on its territory for water supply and waste water systems.

Funding will be devoted to water supply infrastructure as well as to waste water collection included in the Canal de Isabel 2009-2013 investment programme. The programme aims to improve the reliability and effectiveness of water supply and waste water management services thanks to the renovation, extension or construction of water treatment and sewage plants, the construction and extension of water pipe systems and renewal of the distribution network. The project will thus contribute to promoting the reutilisation of water through investment in waste water treatment and in recycled water distribution networks to be used for irrigation and industrial purposes.

In a region where water is scarce, improved piping schemes to reduce leakage, and new waste water treatment infrastructure will have beneficial effects on the environment. Investment will contribute to meeting the growing demand for water for domestic and industrial use and promote the recycling of water in the autonomous community, in line with the objectives of the national plan for water quality, the Madrid water sanitation plan and the relevant EU directives.
