EU 2020 strategy and future of CAP at centre of June plenary session's work

Brussels, 08/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - During the plenary session on 9-10 June the Committee of the Regions (CoR) will be urged to adopt two resolutions that have a direct link with the EUROPE 2020 strategy: the first resolution is on the main guidelines for the economy and employment 2010, and the second is on the increased participation of local and regional authorities in the EU 2020 strategy. There will be a debate on the links and coordination between EU regional and agricultural policies, particularly with regard to the development of the European rural zones. The commissioner in charge of the internal market and services, Michel Barnier, and the commissioner for agriculture and rural development, Dacian Cioloº, will take part in the work.

The economic and financial crisis in Europe is increasingly becoming a social crisis and is putting European solidarity to the test. Both the EU's regional cohesion and the trust of citizens in European integration are at stake. In a press release, the CoR explains that the resolution on the “main guidelines for the economy and employment 2010” highlight citizens' concerns. This resolution particularly underlines the call from local and regional bodies to all levels of government to make greater efforts. The CoR warns that they need to ensure that the impact of the economic crisis on public finances does not lead to a social crisis that could prove devastating. On Thursday 10 June at 10.00am, Michel Barnier will present local and regional delegates with the approach put forward by the Commission. Before the CoR adopts its opinion on market regulation in the autumn, the commissioner and delegates will debate the measures planned for preventing any repetition of the current financial crisis.

On Wednesday 9 June at 2.30pm, Dacian Cioloº will receive proposals from the Committee on the future of the common agricultural policy, contained in the own-initiative report elaborated by René Souchon (PES, France), the president of the Auvergne region.
