Luxembourg, 04/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 3 June, EU interior minsters adopted a European pact to combat international drug trafficking, focussing on cocaine and heroin. The pact was mooted by France and includes three main pledges - destroying cocaine trading routes from West Africa to the EU, destroying heroin trading routes in the Balkans and tackling the impact of illegal drug dealing. Clear action is planned in each of the three areas. The Spanish interior minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, said that the idea was to deal decisively with organised crime by getting EU countries that currently act separately to cooperate. The French interior minister, Brice Hortefeux, said that the pact should bring huge benefits. He said that French police had recently intercepted heroin, cocaine, cannabis, firearms and €990,000 in cash during a raid. It is hoped the pact will act as a model for future action to tackle the trafficking of other types of illegal drug, like cannabis and synthetic drugs. (B.C./transl.fl)
