Malmström mentions Swift deal in passing

Brussels, 04/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said on Thursday 3 June that she had almost completed the negotiations with the United States over an agreement on the transfer of Europeans' bank details in order to combat terrorism (the Swift agreement). In response to a question from this newsletter, she said that great progress had been made and she hoped to submit a document to the EU Council of Ministers and European Parliament next week. Provisional draft agreement has been reached, according to several sources (see EUROPE 10152). The Spanish interior minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, said that he was satisfied with the work done by the commissioner and the end was in sight. Caution remains de rigueur, however, because the European Parliament will have to be won over and some countries still have doubts, he added. (B.C./transl.fl)
