Summit adopts five-year engagement plan for implementing new strategic dialogue launched in 2009

Brussels, 04/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The second EU/Pakistan summit, held on Friday 4 June in Brussels and attended by Pakistan's prime minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, adopted a 5-year “engagement plan” aimed at implementing EU/Pakistan “strategic dialogue”, initiated during the first bilateral summit in 2009. The 5-year plan covers questions relating to security, the economy and development, Herman Van Rompuy told the press. “The whole process will be guided by Pakistani Foreign Minister and High Representative of the Union Catherine Ashton”, the permanent president of the European Council explained. Ashton will host the next meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan in Brussels on 14 and 15 October, Van Rompuy announced. “This will be a first concrete step in our strategic dialogue”, he said. The EU will also continue to provide support for Pakistan in developing a stable economy with a view to combating poverty and achieving stability in the country and region, Van Rompuy said, adding by way of conclusion: “We have common enemies: poverty and terrorism. Our common instrument is political democracy. Now we have to succeed. This meeting provided a good framework for the further development of our relationship”. (H.B./transl.jl)
