31/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 30 May, a joint delegation from the Standing Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (SCLRA) and the Committee of the Regions (CoR) acted as observers at the local elections in Georgia. Voting was to elect mayors and councillors in 64 municipalities, including five autonomous cities. These were, notably, the first elections to directly designate the Mayor of Tbilisi. The aims of the joint missions were to enhance the integrity of the democratic process, to build confidence in local and regional elected representatives and increase voter turn-out. The joint nature of the missions is provided for in a chapter of the cooperation agreement between the CoR and the SCLRA, which was renewed in 2009. (G.B./transl.rt)
