THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/belgian presidency

19/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - Six weeks from the beginning of the Belgian EU Presidency (1 July-31 December 2010), the Belgian secretary of state for European affairs, Olivier Chastel, provided, on Wednesday 19 May, a number of elements on the way meetings with the European Commission and the European Parliament will unfold at the beginning of the Belgian presidency. The traditional meeting between the government and the College of Commissioners will take place on Friday 2 July in Brussels. “This meeting will be composed of a plenary session to tackle a crosscutting subject of the Presidency and more thematic sessions linked to the Belgian programme”, Chastel said. The Belgian presidency will also meet with the political groups of the European Parliament individually, followed by a meeting with the conference of EP presidents. The working programme of the Belgian presidency will be presented to the European Parliament by the Belgian prime minister on 7 July - either by the current prime minister who manages current affairs, Yves Leterme, or by the future head of government decided by early elections on 13 June.
