Turkey should be part of Schengen area

Brussels, 17/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes that Turkey should be able to enjoy the same benefits as other countries which will be allowed to join the Schengen area. “If Serbia is accepted as a Schengen country and can benefit from its opportunities, Turkey should be included in the Schengen system too,” he argued at a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou on Friday 14 May, following the high-level meeting between the two countries. Erdogan said that he would shortly raise the matter with European Union leaders. “Serbia has not begun negotiations with the European Union yet. But Turkey-European Union negotiations are continuing. I believe that Greece will extend the necessary support to us to this end,” he added. (B.C./transl.rt)
