Brussels, 11/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European commissioner for home affairs, Cecilia Malmström, indicated on Monday 10 May, that an agreement with Turkey for re-admitting illegal immigrants arriving in the EU was just about to be concluded. She informed MEPs that “after having achieved a breakthrough over recent weeks, we are close to a solution. We are getting to the end of the negotiations”. This readmission agreement involves Turkish nationals, as well as nationals from countries with which Europe has signed readmission agreements, such as Pakistan. Last November, Turkey and the EU agreed to strengthen their cooperation in an effort to resolve the common problem of influxes of illegal immigrants (EUROPE 10014). Malmström also announced that next year there would be a communication on greater solidarity in the field of illegal immigration, particularly by way of non-binding incentives. She also promised that she would present by the end of June or at the beginning of July, proposals on legal immigration (seasonal workers and people transferred by their companies). Commenting on the state of the current negotiations on the “asylum package”, the Commission recognised that the “blockage” of the texts by the Council, was not an ideal situation and that they would “try and move forward with creative measures”.
