Brussels, 11/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is officially committed to continuing the development of the Schengen area police biometric database, more widely known as the second-generation Schengen Information System (SIS II). Conclusions adopted by the Council of the EU on Tuesday 11 May, indicate that the development of SIS II will continue on the basis of the current SIS II project. This decision was taken after the system was successfully tested for the first time (EUROPE 10125). Before the definitive entry into force of SIS II, it is crucial that a second test succeeds. This final stage or “Milestone 2” - is due to take place in genuinely operational conditions and with optimal network security, the conclusions underline. An assistance plan, “SIS 1 + RE”, will also be maintained during the time it is necessary to accomplish the project. The decision to move forward with the SIS II project was ratified despite the opposition of Austria, Germany and France. The European Commission is now being urged to present a global and comprehensive timetable, as well as a budget estimate for SIS II at the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 3 and 4 of June. SIS II will need to be confirmed by the end of July at the latest during the Council session on 7 and 8 October. Cecilia Malmström, the European commissioner for home affairs, who inherited this “poisoned chalice” from the previous Commission said on Monday 10 May that SIS II is a “problem that won't go away”. She also indicated that “Milestone 2” would take place in the autumn. (B.C./transl.fl)
