Brussels, 10/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - At the end of the Foreign Affairs Council, which she chaired on Monday 10 May in Brussels, Catherine Ashton stated, “we continue to be very concerned by the Iran nuclear programme and the human rights situation in the country”. While remaining open about the possibility of a diplomatic solution being found, in keeping with the “twin track approach”, the High Representative declared that, “we are supporting the process of the Security Council on the restrictive measures” in the event of Iran not being prepared to comply with its international obligations. She declared that sanctions could be adopted “very rapidly”, without doubt, in four to six weeks time. Ms Ashton explained that they would, “keep the door open to negotiations” and said that they hoped, “Iran will show real willingness to engage on that”. The High Representative also said that if Iran wanted to contact her directly for proposing real discussions on the subject of nuclear weapons capability, she would be delighted to discuss the matter with her colleagues at the “5+1” group (China, France, United Kingdom, Russia, United States and Germany).
